Michael J. Girdy, Sr. (saxophonist) is a native of Richmond, Virginia and a graduate of Hampton Institute (University). After completing his undergraduate degree in Jazz Studies, he joined the United States Air Force and toured nationally for three years with the Stars of Sound Musical Showcase, as a musician (alto and tenor sax) and vocalist. Mr. Girdy has had the pleasure of meeting and performing with many great musicians and is a featured soloist with several groups throughout the DC/Metro area. His diverse repertoire includes jazz, r&b, blues, funk, bebop and gospel with over 30+ years of performing experience.
Mr. Girdy is the founder and director of his own musical company, GI Entertainment. He provides musical entertainment from solos, duets, trios and large bands for all special occasions. The entertainment company performs for a wide variety of events including weddings, receptions, graduations, and retirement ceremonies, just to name a few.
He has had the pleasure of performing for such clients as Washington Legends Charity Benefit, National Coalition of 100 Black Women, United Negro College Fund, Ice House Café, Bank of America, Northern Virginia Community College, Parkinson Foundation of the National Capital Area, State Farm Insurance, Verizon, District of Columbia Water/Sewage, NAACP, Booz Allen Hamilton, RGS, Maden Technologies, Phi Beta Sigma, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta, Inc., Continental Societies, National Education Association, and Washington Nationals Dream Foundation, as well as a host of private client events.
In addition to his performance career, Mr. Girdy has been the Musical Director for the South Lakes High School Theatre department for 10 years. Under his direction, Mr. Girdy has led his student orchestra in receiving 3 prestigious Cappie Award nominations and 2 wins for Best Pit Orchestra for a Musical.
